Human error leads to privacy breach

Cambs County Council says ‘human error’ caused breach that saw 300 email addresses shared

The story, reported by Cambridgshire Live emerged this morning:

Cambridgeshire County Council has apologised after 300 email addresses were shared when they were sent information. An email, later recalled, sent by a staff member at Cambridgeshire County Council, revealed 300 email addresses to the other recipients of the recall email.

Other recipients of the email recall message were able to see the email addresses of other recipients. One source said this represented a “complete breach of GDPR” and meant people were now able to contact other recipients of the email recall message.

The source said recipients were using the email addresses to communicate with other affected addressees about the email breach. They are considering making a complaint to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council confirmed that 300 emails were affected out of 1,000. They said the other emails were sent correctly.

The spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise to those people whose email addresses were not blind copied when they were sent information regarding Traffic Regulation Order. We have referred this error to the Information Commissioner, and we will be apologising to those affected.

“It was human error, and it has been picked up internally with the team.”

What the incident demonstrates is that mistakes can be easy to make, and can be very costly if those affected, or others, decide to take action.

A Cyber Liability cover, which can often be added to a Commercial policy, can be a way of covering against inadvertant slip ups that can have far reaching and potentially expensive consequences. Have a chat with an experienced broker about how you can protect yourself and your enterprise.
